German Field Radio Project

Hello,

My latest project is to build some German field radios for our unit to use during larger tacticals. These will be working radios so the insides will be mobile handheld CB's. We will be using Cobra 38 WX ST radios inside the radio boxes.

The project is based on this model field radio:



So far I have built the main section of the boxes.



I have also added the spines on the front and back.



Next is to add the side doors and then the outside hardware.

We plan on using the internal electronics from a Cobra handheld mic and put them in these:

I have tried CBs at a few events and they don't seem to work very well

I think I need to try FRS radios.

I now have a mold to make my own replica handsets as well.

What was the problem with CBs?
How would using FRS work better, in your opinion?

For some reason they just did not transmit and receive well. They needed constant squelch adjustment.

I have Cobra 35HHW radios so I figured they were a quality model.

Not sure what to do to make them work better. Im not a CB expert.

I used business band radios for my BC 611's. They work great. Most business stuff is digital now, so these older radios are cheap.

I am also working on a pair of Feldfu B radios. Mine are made of abs plastic. The real thing was Bakelite believe it or not! I cut the plastic,routered grooves for the ridges and bent it using a heating element specifically for plastic. Everything else is cobbled together out of plastic & metal bits. Plenty left to do. The band antenna is made of a dollar store tape measure with plastic rivets and painted black.

Haven't had time to work on mine much. Annoying part is having to do everything twice. Mostly going for a couple display pieces for public events. Mighty figure some frs radios in when I have more resources. I have a set of original headphones coming from the Ukraine that were $65 on eBay but have had the headband replaced.
