I'm a little disappointed that it seems a lot of people are abandoning this site in favor of the face book stuff. Some of us either can't or won't sign up for facebook so we're missing out on a lot of updated information. This was a great site for quite a while, but there are a lot of cobwebs & echos these days..... Fritz

Its because FB is easier to use over a smartphone.

Unfortunately it seems like this forum is dying. I won't go on facebook, too much personal information out there to get into trouble.

I'm on FB. It's so hard to make any sense of it, there are dozens of groups, seemingly no way to organize conversations on any of them, how can anyone keep track of it all? If I don't check it for a day the older stuff gets buried and I never see it at all. And the posts on FB all too often seem to come from kids and other people that I suspect have never even attended an event. I think it's a shame that the forums and even the Yahoo groups seem to be fading away and all the conversation moving to Facebook.

I agree. I'm not sure that FB was meant to be used for some of the purposes that we use these other fora. It is just a messaging service. I prefer a forum like this. It's better organized. There is an incredible amount of knowledge being shared in the hobby. FB seems to lack any good way to catalog and search that information.

Plus one to using this site, I was not on here in the hay day. But I wish it would go back that direction. Fb is ok for groups to talk amongst them selfs but mass communication is much better here.

FACEBOOK = vast wasteland. It seems to be the lair of the virtual WWII reenactor.
I think those that the most interested will stay here for the time being. The heavy handed moderation seems to have entered into a Spring thaw.

Nothing wrong with some FB groups. Some ACTUALLY are full of very knowledgeable people. What we all have to learn to avoid is the FB groups full of 19 to 23 year old know-it-alls that don't give two rips to listen to the old hands of the genre that established this genre for them. Most of them would rather bash them when those so-called "know-it-alls" get their damn bubbles bursted at every turn.
This new group of young reenactors need to all be punched in the damn mouth. They're so damn arrogant and won't listen to anything you tell em' and every one of them are "10 foot rulers"(i.e. if you can't tell from ten feet? Its good enough, which is just total BS).

I guess it depends on the group the young ones belong to. We have a good mix in ages, oldest being a WW2 vet and youngest being 17. We enforce authenticity standards, none of this 10 yard BS. We drill, qualify shoot annually, and conduct training (bayonet, assault, ect) twice a year. All members know that if it's not correct to not bring it. We also all get along rather well for being such a diverse group. If I found out one of my "youngsters" was doing some of the crap I see on FB they would be on KP for an eternity.

FB seems a little like the Wild West as far as reenacting discussion goes. Countless groups, most are small, and often dominated by relatively new reenactors with just enough knowledge to be dangerous. I think I am seeing signs of discussions just beginning to coalesce around the groups with the best information being shared and the most reasonable moderation. But even then, as mentioned above, there is no way to organize or search the information that has been posted, and after a few days, it's essentially down the drain. A shame.

The worst part is not being able to quote someone a few posting above you like you can the forum, then you have to sit and explain you're not talking about the person right before you. Facebook is great for individuals or posting information, but the forums are much better for having a discussion of any length.
