I portray an infantry soldier in the 1st Infantry division, 16th infantry regiment, item company. I would like to know how i fit into the big picture of the division. I've looked for a line diagram that goes from division to squad and haven't been able to find one.

Thank you! That makes things much clearer. So 3 squads per platoon and 3 platoons per rifle company.

Well 4 platoons (3 rifle and 1 Weapons) + HQ "platoon" or section

Also, if you have a Ammunition/Pioneering Platoon... Battalion HQ, will designate which squads amongst the battalion are assigned to the Ammunition/Pioneering Platoon.
As pertaining to how YOU fit into the division?? You are one amongst many... but, you make up one small part.
You go here and you go there and you do as you are told... and depending on your CO... you nothing short of cannon fodder in reality(more so if you're a replacement)... BUT, your number one goal is to stay alive, you live day to day, with your weapon as your best friend... and with each experience you gain knowledge.
You learn what to do and what not to do and you try to pass your experience on to others(if possible) to help them stay alive...
As a veteran of the 3rd once told me... combat in short is... "hours of boredom, broken up by a few short moments of sheer terror and chaos."
