Steve Zaloga's book "Armored Victory 1945" has a lot photos of Shermans with concrete, sandbag and steel plate armor. Well worth the price if your an armor fan or modeler.

According to reports well. Also you will see Marines with wood and sand bags on the islands as the Jap magnetic bombs wouldn't stick.

Concrete would not stop the high velocity rounds. Shaped charge weapons and HEAT, sort of. "In tests conducted by the 709th Tank Battalion in February 1945 German Panzerschreck antiarmor rockets penetrated the concrete and the tank’s skin. The concrete, however, reduced the effectiveness of the German warhead inside the tank. According to the 753rd Tank Battalion, poured concrete reduced the danger of the crew being killed even if the tank was destroyed. The use of concrete became widespread enough that members of the 750th Tank Battalion spent hours with jackhammers removing up to six inches of concrete from their vehicles when they prepared to turn in their M4 medium tanks at the end of the war." www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=ADA451272

Just makes me think what else they did to try to come back home in one piece.
