Hello everyone,
Who sells the best barbed wire for the reenactor on a budget. I seen a Hollywood prop company selling 50ft for $150 which is a little pricy for me. I bought some cheap stuff at a party store, which was complete crap.
I want to block some of my display , but i want something that wont hurt anyone, but looks somewhat realistic. If anyone knows a good place, pass the knowledge please. Thanks Joshua k

Try making your own. I bought a spool of natural jute twine. Strung about 20 ft. between 2 stanchions twice. Twist the length. Then about every foot or foot and a half tie 2 short pieces and cut them off to make the barbs. Saturated the "barbs" with Elmer's glue. Let it dry and dipped the length into a paint can with a color I mixed up to look rusty. A local paint store gave me leftover/unclaimed paint and even mixed it for me. I then strung the wire between the stanchions to dry. You can maybe spray a litte sliver on in a few places. It can take a little time to tie the barbs and can be a little messy with the paint. I am fortunate that I have a place to work. The end results are 20-30 foot sections that are fairly cheap and from a distance looks pretty real. Charles

One guy in my unit bought a coil of metal wire and tied rubber bands to it as barbs. He then spray-painted rust-brown primer in spots to make it look more metalic. Now, one of our favorite past-times at events is watching spectators come up and touch the barbs to see if they're real. He said it was a pain to tie all those knots with rubber bands, so be warned.
Another fellow took white twine, tied knots and strings at regular lengths, then coated the whole thing in liquid plastic (like what you can get at Lowe's and Home Depot) so it would stay rigid. He then spray-painted with flat grey primer and rust brown primer
I just use some Halloween stuff that I picked up at Michael's Hobby and Craft for $5 for 5 feet. Looks well enough and no labor required.

I made mine like above but used cheep white string and glued it with polyseamseal. let it set then painted it flat black and went over a few spots with some red primer to look rusty. I used polyseamseal as it is very durable and water resistant when cured.

This is a little off topic, I use fake barbed wire for my display and it seems to me that I get more questions about the fake barbed wire then anything.

Im trying to get some pre made stuff. I know making the stuff my self would be cheaper, but I just dont have the time or the room to hang up drying wire.

That's probably the best solution you're going to find in premade stuff between now and Halloween.

I've bought this barbed wire in the past: www.darksidedisplays.com/detail.aspx?ID=7405Excellent price, and almost indistinguishable from the real thing until you get really close. I've had runs of the "rusty" and the "shiny" stuff, and as 1marinediv says, you get more questions about the barbed wire than the rest of your display - particularly from other reenactors. Peter

Nice! This will help me out with 'fencing' off sections of my camp so people don't cut through it all the time.

I picked up 100 feet of fake barbed wire at a Halloween Store for $40 this past weekend, so it's back on the market again.
