I doubt youll get jumped on, youll just get a lot of opinions and facts against flour. I don't know how flour would be any safer...I can see it injuring eyes and respirator problems more than baking soda. Baking soda is in eye wash, flour isn't. Baking soda can wash out of clothes and can be used to WASH clothes, flour can't. Cut and dry. I wonder if the eye injuries had less to do with the baking soda and more with the charge in the grenade or other foreign objects.
I won't try flour because I've experimented with it and while it makes a very impressive "poof", it isn't worth the trouble or the beating you'll take from ruining someones uniform, or from causing someone to inhale a dust cloud of flour. I wouldn't allow them at my event or wouldn''t allow anyone in any of my groups to field them.

Baking soda = two eye injuries requiring a visit to the emergency room.
Flour = no injuries
The math for me is easy. I offered what I thought was a viable solution. Whether you or anyone decides to use it is entirely up to you.

....in some of them and in very dilute concentrations. As Warren said, concentrated (powdered) sodium bicarbonate is rather irritating.

Now, on another note, we did have a fine fellow show up at our last event that had some resin grenades RGD-33's, but I believe the fellow he gets them from makes others) in which you place a shotgun wad in a recess. You placed your "charge" of black powder in a bag, water balloon, etc. within the wad with your fuse coming out. Quite nice, makes a nice report, etc. You do have to scrounge them back up, but still, they look great, and they make a bang.
Just another idea.

I've seen flour catch fire before so baking soda would be my preference since I've had a face full of baking soda with some in my eye before as well. While it irritated my eye a bit, a simple canteen water wash alleviated it completly without an additional campfire sideshow. www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_EGTzEsCZII'll take the Baking Soda thankies. I'd say the ground fire issue is a huge no matter what grenade type or charge size is agreed upon. A consideration / judgement must be made when a scheduled event starts. If the event devolves and rainfall is average in an area, cool. By the time the event rolls around there may be the threat of very dry conditions in the event area. High winds would only make it worse. You fellows in the south and west probably get that a lot. Then no matter what grenades guys bring someone with common sense needs to make the call. There is probably nothing like reenacting at an event duting a forest fire.

LOL Johnnie, I do recall the "immediate cease fire" to stomp out fires started by grenades. Additionally, we have had to have a "no pyro" rule in force because of tinderbox conditions, etc.

An option that might not work below freezing is using a packet that will mix vinegar and baking soda. My wife bought these for me a few years ago. They are a foil bag that you squeeze before throwing. In another time period I have squeezed them and pushed them into a blackened tenis ball to throw. In a few seconds the bag will swell up and pop. They could be placed in a juice container as well.

Frankly the best option is rubber or foam rubber grenades as folks should react to these if they're informed in a warning order as to how they should react. Roger

Ya know one year some knuckle head just picked up a sizeable rock and threw it at me, clunking me on the helmet with it. When I yelled at him saying "Why the hell did you do that?" (Actually I'm positive it wasn't that "G" rated). He just blankly looked at me and said "That was my grenade! Good death buddy!" Good gravey I almost killed the guy I was so damned mad. Roger

I used to use those "Little Hugs" bottles with some minor amount of black powder, and flour or something in them when I did Russian

Has anyone tried an ibuprofen bottle on the end of a dowell to simulate a steilhand? I'm wondering if it works or not?

The final product was a painted huggies bottle, 30 grains of FF black powder, 3" canon fuse and baking soda. They worked well but I need to play with packaging the charge. I used food service glove finger tips then wrapped it with duct tape. On several when the powder ignited the packaging was strong enough to stay intact stifle the charge. Going to try the water balloon suggestion next. Roger......it would have brought tears to your eyes.....but you need to teach Don about throwing a grenade
