What I don't get is how did he buck regulations long enough to have that beard? Depending on the unit and your C.O., regulations could be to the letter or "as long as I don't get chewed out, you guys do what you want." I would say this is a prime example of the second.

Back in the day soldiers while in the "Field" could get away with not shaving. Commanders would have their troops get clean when there where facilities available. This guy's beard is obviously trimmed, which would lead one to think that if he could trim it, then he should be able to shave it off.
