My vote is for the Russian mosin nagant- about $100 will get you the rifle, and depending where you get it, the cleaning kit, sling, and bayonet too...

Don't choose an impression based on the cost of a rifle.
You can get a German K-98 for around or under $200, BUT German uniforms and equipment are more expensive than U.S. stuff. So even if you get a cheap rifle, it may still me more expensive once you get the entire impression.
Or you could get a U.S. M-1 Garand for around $500 - 600, but the uniforms and equipment are cheap(er) and easy(er) to find. And even though the rifle costs more, the complete impression may cost less than a full German impression.
Did that make any sence??

Once you add tax, shipping and either gunshop handling or C&R fees or travel it isn't a $500 rifle anymore.

Go British/Commonweath an Enfield either #1 mark 3 or #4 mark 1 will cost in the 200 to 300 range. I have picked up quite a few # 1's for around $150. Uniforms are not the bad from WPG. One of Jerry's package deals is around $555.

Jim CMP always ships to my house, I've never been charged tax to my house and the standard shipping from CMP is $22.95 a rack grade M1 is only $445 so even with tax and shipping and all its a good value.

Jim CMP always ships to my house, I've never been charged tax to my house and the standard shipping from CMP is $22.95 a rack grade M1 is only $445 so even with tax and shipping and all its a good value. Shultzy Keep in mind the age of the original poster is 13. It's my understanding they require a FFL or C&R to send direct and your going for the Rack Grade so for a the thirteen year old asking the question you have to add the price of the C&R to the equation. I'd also suggest staying away from the Rack Grade if service grades are still available. Then once you have your fair rack grade you're going to have to bring it to WWII standards with proper sling, sights and all the other bells and whistles. Sorry by the time your done you'll have $800 dollars worth of John Garands finest if you bring it up to presentable standars. If not you've got a nice wall hanging decoration that I wouldn't bayonet a racoon with. Now I can go next door and for $60 buy a Carano off my neighbor who has been given three. All have only been dropped once so they're good for late war. Shultzy, I'm not saying a competent hillbilly armorer (my grade of gunsmith ability) couldn't refurbish the stocks with simple green and Home Depot wood putty or change the sites but anyone not sending a CMP rifle to his Smith for a second or third opinion is playing Russian Roulette with an automatic rifle. Then you have the expense of owning your own gauges or paying someone to blue print your rifle. Again more expense to the $445 rifle. This kid needs to know that a rifle is the firearm, cleaning kit, trigger lock and spare parts kit not just what he's buying from CMP or We be Guns and Stuff. Jim

Usually the DNR(Dept. of Natural Resources) host them. You might try looking online for classes in your area.

If you go to the CMP site they list acceptable documents and Military ID is acceptable in leu of a DD214. I don't suggest anyone fax their drivers license, DD214 or governmet ID to any dot com. Better yet for vets screw the M1 Association and enroll in the VFW or American Legion and have your Post Commander liason purchases. That or use your local gun store as a mailing point, which ever is most comfortable for your particular location.
For me Camp Perry is a one tank trip but flipping my gun dealer $25 and giving the CMP $22 for shipping is cheaper then shelling out $70 to Shell Oil.
Again, CMP is a dot com and not dot gov so it's not my fathers Oldsmobile anymore.

I bought my through my father-in-law. If the buyer is over 65 years old there isn't any red-tape. Just has to be an American Citizen, and can prove it + join something simple like the GCA www.thegca.org/ ; that is it.
