Looks like it would have been used for PR. The second photo even states "GI won't shave til buddy gets back" kinda makes me think along that line... If you had more of the artical or typed it out for all to read it might shed alittle light on who this guy is and why he did it, and was able to get away with it.

you love to post links from other forums without adding the context where they came from. youve done this for years now. how about the rest of the story by just posting a link to what you found over on G503. www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=108&t=173007

After seeing the article, why would you believe it was anything other then a public relations move? Bill

First of all I will state that I do not know WWII US Regs. that apply to facial hair. On that note when I was in the USAF from 65 to 69 we could have a mustache that only grew to the corner of our mouth. But you could then have a handlebar as long as you could grow it if it did not touch your face. Mine had a complete curl over and back which took a lot of wax to keep legal. On a funny side story while overseas and should I say it over indulging in liquor A buddy told me my stache was not equal on both sides so we attempted to even it up. By the time we were done it was back to the edge of my lips. The next day I wanted to kill him. Bob

From reading the story. Boy my eyes hurt. He is a hospital patient and is most likely not assigned to a unit. I have seen other pics of soldiers in hospital with beards etc. I think the rest is just a PR bit to remember his buddy that the story references. If you also note the "girl in the PX" comment It gives you a good idea that is was an oddity and she "hoped his buddy got back soon" i.e she hopes it gets shaved off.

When I have posted the full link to other forums members have griped they couldn't read them because they were not members of that forum.. dammed if you do dammed if you don't.. He states in the article that he and his buddy had started growing the moustaches when they left the states....so they had them a long time, a year or more, so it wasn't just a PR stunt because his buddy was in a POW camp.... Oh and piper.. it states that he was a combat vet of Sicily, Salerno and Anzio...
