interesting photo: helmet markings?

I recieved this scan from the US army heritage and education center's collection. It is certainly interesting. Its the 81st recon, 1st armored division somewhere in italy.

does anyone else notice anything that looks like a marking of some kind on a coupple of the guy's helmets?

From left to right the first guy seems to have a 78 on his right-hand -side and the last guy seems to have some sort of letters...apparently IL maybe something to identify each other?
