Here are my grandparents on my mom's side. He was mostly with the 8th AF (379th Bomb Group, 527th Bomb Sqd) out of Kimbolton England. Initially his paperwork had him slated to be a ball turret gunner on a B-17, when they realized that his being 5'11" would be something of an impediment. Had some pilot training before slipping a disc in his back. He ended up as a communications specialist, working on the radar units in B-17s for most of his time there. After VE day, he was shipped back stateside, and was being retrained to work on B-29s in the Pacific when Japan surrendered. img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/eiserneskreuz/grandpa/scan0001.jpg

I'm going to sticky this thread. Let's keep this one going! If you have pics of your relatives who served in the war, please share them.

Unfortunately I do not have any in theatre pictures of my grandfather, only his dress blues pic that every marine gets. I do however have some extrodinary pictures of my wife's grandfather which I will post a separate thread on, as they are awesome pics!

My uncle Carmen served in WWII with the 75th division. I wear his unit patch on my opposite sleeve when we wear dress uniforms. He earned the CIB, EIB, bronze star and three battle stars on his campaign ribbon. Recently discovered his brother, Albert, also served, signed up in Feb 1941, served with the 29th division. For those of you that are interested in the 29th, I found it very interesting to compare the photo of y uncle to a photo of Lt. Van Roosen, i found in the book, battle of brittany/ brest. The photos are nearly identical, indictating that the two soldiers were posed and the pictures taken, after the survivors were "decorated" for actions with the 29th in Brittany. There were only 13 survivors according to that small blurb in the book. My uncle may have been one of them. He has passed away, and never spoke of the war, but I was told that he was sent to OCS at some point during the war. He was a medic. Pictures hopefully will be attached properly. i177.photobucket.com/albums/w206/ww2trainer/albert1.jpgi177.photobucket.com/albums/w206/ww2trainer/Image0001.jpg

Here are two photos of my maternal grandfather, John Edward Soroka. He served in the Aleutian Islands with the Coast Artillery, and was a member of the Alaskan Defense Command. Sadly, he died the year before I was born. I would give anything to have been able to know him. This first photo is taken in an unknown location. It might be somewhere in Alaska, but it looks more like the Pacific Northwest to me. i23.photobucket.com/albums/b386/SpartanTeach/GrandpaSoroka.jpgThis second photo is housed inside a frame that he made himself out of multiple shell casings, and two .50 cal rounds. The picture is a cropped shot from a larger group photo, taken in the Aleutians. Notice the ADC patch on his shoulder, and the timber in the background. i23.photobucket.com/albums/b386/SpartanTeach/GrandpaSoroka2.jpg

images.kodakgallery.com/photos4693/3/15/54/69/50/9/950695415306_0_ALB.jpgMy grandfather (on my mother's side), in WW2 (far right) with the crew of his B-26. He was in the 1st Bomber Command and was the navigator for a stripped-down, modified B-26. His mission was primarily towing aerial targets for Gunnery Practice in the Pacific Theatre. His B-26 had no defensive weapons on it, since it rarely saw any action. After that stint, he was promoted to Sgt and was the co-pilot for a C-47 cargo plane, and transported goods and troops to the islands during the Pacific Campaign. He survived the war and now lives in Middle River, MD with his wife.
