Mooch no offense but I would highly recommend never washing a jumpsuit sure it looks new now but the best thing to do is to go to events and let it gradually become dirty over time it will in the long run look better than washing it and basically bleaching it out. That is what im doing and it will only look "new" untill the first time you take a dive into the mud or crawling across the ground for any distance.

The advice I was given by guys who have been doing this for 20+ years and the manufacturers was/is to hand wash the jump suits in cold soapy water and let them air dry. I've been doing that for a while now and mine still look great...worn in but still great. To each his own. R/ Mooch

The straps appear to be loose and just hanging there. The fellas would use friction tape to secure them. R/ Mooch

Form the Evidence i have gathered, 3/502 should be on the left shoulder, 2nd would be in the middle and then HQ on the Helmet, and 1st on the right. I can give you one picture of 3rd Bat 502 guys with the scarf on the left arm... though i know every one knows it, the Eisenhower pic talking to the paras, they are 3rd battalion of the 502nd and they have it on their left shoulder. Also, fix your blousing job next time trooper!! lol no but seriously dont half ass blousing your trousers that something o be proud of.. nex time just when you tie your knife to your leg, pull the pant leg down so it aint scrunched up above it. -Cary

The white cloth is only for the normandy jump and a few days after. At was used for iding. Doc. Spahn F Co/1/2/502/101

R/ Mooch Mooch I came across this while surfing for historical info on of all things Woolite. It has do do with "Optical Brightners" and washing instructions for the Army ACU's and MARPAT but the information should be good for keeping reproduction and vintage uniforms kosher...green like a Vlasic Dill Pickel...damn tough audience. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_brightenerIt also explains why the UV test for vintage equipment and stitching is going to give false readings 75% of the time. The 3rd Battalion 502nd wore a gauze recognition scarf around the neck. Look at the photo's in DeTrez's Point of No Return. 2nd battalion wore them on the left shoulder. 1st battalion wore no type of recognition that I know of. Lawdog, stated HQ 1/502 wore it through the netting. I have never seen that but I'm not saying he's wrong. Need Equipment:
Mapcase Compass and pouch Binoculars and case Wrist Watch Pistol and holster
These are all items that a platoon sargent would be wearing as per the TO&E. Also a few more mags for the thompson, maybe a mag bag as seen in Saving Private Ryan. The boots have to go, you need brown, as well as what mooch said about the helmet netting. I draw from my 7 years of researching the 502nd, including interviewing the vets and pouring over the photo's. Paul

Whadda ya mean defensive? Who said we are defensive? Where do you get off calling us defensive? Maybe your the defensive one......... As an aside, hand washing uniforms in mild detergent and air-drying is a basic common sence step for their long term care. Brush dry soil etc. off first, don't use bleach based deteregents (I use ordinary household soap or mild liquid soap), don't boil them, don't tumble dry them and they won't shrink and turn purple, it's simple. Soaking in warm water for a while with 15 minutes aggitation by hand gets items as clean as machine washing for 1 hour +, rinse them in cool of cold water, job done. If an item isn't heavily soiled try just sponging, especially on wool, we are all used to a clean shirt every day, and most of use wouldn't dream of wearing the same underwear for a week but back then servicemen had rather different sencibilities and bigger problems to deal with than B.O., in my experience if everyone stinks equally badly you don't really notice it after a while.
