Why buy a repro when you can get a good genuine ww2 lid for a little more! Then buy a good repro liner and chinstrap! The 'for sale' section on the various forums will have what you are after if you are prepared to wait, Ebay is expensive!

If you have a size 68 Melon, a real helmet is NOT a little bit more.

If you have a size 68 Melon, a real helmet is NOT a little bit more. DL Exactly! This is what my son has faced as a teen with very limited funds and size 68 helmet head. He finally found an original M42 for $300. Most other size 68's he found were closer to $400. Instead, last year, he used his Christmas cash to buy a repro M40 that did him well over the last year. If it wasn't for a very charitable soul who offered to let him buy the helmet he has now on installments, he'd still be wearing the repro. It's a good solution for many people. Warren Warren

Agree point taken for 68 size but he is looking at a 66 and in many cases 64 will suffice. To me one of the most important points of reenacting is accuracy and the helmet stands out so ideally originals should be used where budget allows!

Unless you are lucky at finding size 66 shells, they are retailing here in the Colonies for $150 plus for a rockbottom decent shell. I have seen many dealers asking over $200 for one with no pitting.
There are decent replicas out there, but plenty more that are subpar. For those on a budget, a decent replica can be made to look the part, it just takes someone with the know how.

Thanks for the replies. Its ashame so many crappy repros and so called "originals" flood the market. It does not make buying a helmet easy.
