Our GI unit and some Brits went to a Ruby Tuesdays one night after doing some training for a SOV event. Most of us were in WWII field uniforms. A gentleman came up to our table, thanked us for our service, then left money to pay for our meals. Talk about an awkward moment. We were mistaken for active duty soldiers. After the guy left, one of our unit members picked up the money, told the guy we were only reenactors and offered to return the cash.

This incident happened back when I did civil war in Oregon. We just had our annual period dance and several of us went out for a late dinner. We were all in period dress, the men in cavalery uniforms and the ladies in their finest dresses. The truck stop/diner seated us in the back room. What we didn’t know was that was the same room where the Saturday night AA meeting took place. We got a lot of strange looks from people expecting to see an AA meeting in that room.

Yesterday I did wear my uniform for the first time, being out in public with it on. I was on my way to The Fort Worth Militaria show, this is what the reaction was that I did get. One older guy had thought that I was in the reserves, a high school girl told me that I looked handsome, my wife told me that it was scary how I naturally looked in my uniform, the girl at work she also told me that I looked handsome in uniform. It was a good feeling that I got all that day from wearing WWII reenactment uniform out in public-Doc Jones
Edited for spelling.

I reenact as a german (heer) and i wear my uniform in places if we go to eat or pick up groceries during an event. Swastika doesnt automatically mean nazi althought that is what most people think. If anyone asks about the uniform or why we reenact as germans, i try to educate them instead of hiding my uniform. Even being on the german side you should wear your uniform nice. We are all americans still the same we just are trying to educate the public about the german side.

Then there was the time I was talking to a 3rd SS guy and someone walked up, noticed the Deathshead on his collar, and asked him if he was portraying a pirate. What do you say to something like that? Avast, ye maties!!! maybe??? To elaborate on what someone said above, not only are you representing your fellow unit members and reenactors in general when you're out in public, but you're ALSO representing the men who wore these uniforms 60 years ago! If you're where the public can see you.... AND in uniform, you'ld better act like every WW2 vet who ever served is watching you!
