Now for a question of my own. I should know this since I used to do a 9th SS impression however I don't...why did the soldaten tuck the front of their smock under their belt?

That was done a lot with the early style smocks like he is wearing basically to make it easier to get the bluse pockets.
The type II had the pocket slits on the outside.

Lee,
That looks like a captured US helmet net on the soldat.
Quick note, decals for the application on helmets could be bought at a common drugstore during the war! So you will see decals on soldiers that proudly represent their branch throughout the war.

I was thinking the same thing, I believe that photo was taken in the waning days of the war in the east. I can't remember if the Walloons ever saw action in the west, I remember reading in Degrelle's book that they were disappointed not being used in Wacht am Rhine since they could not help "liberate" their home land.
Maybe it was something picked up earlier, they were in Belgium sometime before D Day for reorganization. ( there are pretty well known photos with Degrelle and Sepp. ) Hard to say really. But even in that photo it is the exception not the rule.
You nailed it with the store bought decals, funny how the Germans seemed to have an exception to every rule!

Interesting... That's the first time I think I've seen both a cover and strap used together. Is it evidenced anywhere?

Great suff, Frund! One thing you might want to do is rub a little dirt on your rank and shoulder eagle. They're gleaming...
