I'm noticing a pattern on alot of the websites that they're selling them between 280-300$......For a molded piece of metal? Someone tell me there's another way....
If needs be I am willing to cough up the 300$, but not unless there's a cheaper way. Do you guys think eBay has some good offers?

Yeah, you can go to Shotgun News and pay $65 for a Deutsch replica helmet. I don't know what they are like. I'd save up my $$ and get the real mccoy. This hobby is not cheap.

Yeah of course! www.hessenantique.com/Original_Restored_Helmets_s/45.htmI've heard good things about Hessen. Not to mention their M42 helmet price is awesome.

The reproduction M42 offered by Hessen has some strange aspects to it. But a refurb'd original in a bigger size will still cost you (see price scale).
I would suggest a Spearhead-made M42 helmet repro over any other repro M42 any day of the week.
However, one of the best ways to "get" a German helmet is to purchase a postwar repainted shell used by the Czechs from Vit Zemanek, along with liner pieces, and build/refinish it yourself.

The Hessen's liner is really weird. The shell is good quality and so is the hardware. The shell has no size stamps. I cannot comment on the paint.
To be honest, I think the price is good for someone with a big noggin' (60-61cm), IF you ditch the liner after you purchase the helmet and replace it with a good quality reproduction. Maybe get the shell repainted too, but again I can't comment on the paint job.
From what I recall this helmet is heavier than the current Spearhead runs and is more close, if not the same, to the weight of an original.

Nice Spearhead review. I guess I'd have to set up a Paypal account....

Has any one delt with Vit Zemanek? if so how is he? His ebay store looks nice but just curious on how reliable he is (had some bad ebay experiences) -Chris

He was quick to respond to e-mail questions, shipping wasn't much of an issue and the items arrived as described. I was quite pleased with my transaction with him. I stupidly sold my first helmet from him and will probably be purchasing a new one from him. The stahlhelm will be an expensive investment but I think it is one of the items that makes your impression. The helmet is one thing I personally wouldn't compromise on.

Topper. Small side bar. Speaking as a reenactor that has purchased my fair share of crap. Save money. Buy the best item first time out. You will only have to buy it once. You'll be one happy reenactor. Happy hunting.

Just remember unless you plan to always do a certain time frame in the war, a M42 is going to date you.

Search on Ebay. I got my M35 from a seller named "pirschen1975" for 65.00 total. I'm sure he or other sellers have all styles at a fair price.

Pirschen stocks the same helmets at Spearhead, for much cheaper. The M42 is an excellent reproduction for what it is. I don't care for the liner (I would switch it out for a high-quality Euro. made repro) but it works. He, like spearhead only stocks size 66cm and 68cm repros though... if you're a 64cm shell (like me) you are relegated to wearing an original shell.

one last question before i look into Pirschen helmets, is there a wrong and right way of measuring the circumference of my head? stupid question...but I should probably figure that one out.

Tape measure in CM, around your head, just like you would do for any hat fitting.
Most people seem to be 56-61cm.
If you're 56cm or 57cm, you're going to need a size 64 shell with the respective 56 or 57 liner. If you're 58 or 59cm, you need a size 66 helmet, with the respective liner for your size. 60/61, you need the size 68, etc.
If you're bigger than 61, you might need to get the large sized helmet, and swap out the liner for a postwar one that doesn't have the two-band style German liner, but rather a one band assembly that the liner is directly attached to, thusly allowing for more room. I think the Finn liners are like this. Sure, it's not correct, but there's not much else you can do.
